Cotinine
Background
Cotinine is a metabolite of nicotine, which means that when you intake nicotine in to your body Cotinine is formed. Cotinine can be used to measure the grade of tobacco smoking. People have different thoughts on what Cotinine can do to your body and mind.
There are different measures of smoking and how its effecting your body and how much. Studies have been done that a positive of Cotinine is that it can improve mental functions. Many think that it can improve mental health and prevent neuron (a cell in the nervous system) death. Even though it seems this would be a good substance on the other hand other studies have been done that Cotinine can also contribute to Alzheimer’s.
Studies have also been done that Race can play a role in how Cotinine affects your body. It is found that black people commonly register with a higher blood Cotinine levels other than white people whose level is usually lower.
Not only can race play a role in this but so can gender. It has been shown that more women over men smoke menthol cigarettes, which hold Cotinine in the blood stream for a longer period of time. Studies have also been done that show that the difference in all of these measures of smoking may be more complex than race and gender. Human Health Implications
Many different studies have been done that show different dangers Cotinine could cause to the human health and not only to the person choosing to intake it but innocent people around them.. Because Cotinine is airborne people inhale it, which transfers to their lungs. While large amounts of Cotinine are in your lungs it causes your lung cells to die, which in turn leads to lung cancer.
Also Cotinine can affect your brain causing memory loss and in some cases causing Alzheimer’s disease. Another way that Cotinine can be dangerous is that by taking it, it could lead to coronary heat disease. Also studies have shown that Cotinine affects pregnant mothers saliva. Even though Cotinine has these down side’s people believe that it helps your body. One of the ways that it’s believed to help your body is by improving mental function. Economical and Political
Cotinine is a metabolite of Nicotine so this means with looking at Cotinine being banned your looking at Nicotine being banned. If there was a ban against Nicotine it seems as though a ban would cause a relation similar to the reaction of the alcohol prohibition. There would be a lot of underground growing and transactions. Most likely many arrests would be made because it would be treated just like drugs. We would no longer have products such as Cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco.
IF Nicotine was banned many people that use the product would go through a heavy withdraw which could cause very bad effects. Hopefully it would only be tobacco being banned and not the products used in helping people quit their intake on Nicotine.
The current countries that export this products include; Argentina, Brazil, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, Turkey, United States and Zimbabwe. Those countries governments would start to loose a lot of money if they banned Nicotine products. There would have to be many laws made and there would most likely be high consequences to those already addicted to nicotine because it would be hard for them to quit.
